This week, I’m sharing a personal story about how I took a leap of faith, left a job without a backup plan, and ultimately found a better opportunity. If you’re hesitant to make a career change as an accountant, this might be the encouragement you need.

Why I Decided to Leave My Job Without a Backup Plan 🤔

Sometimes, a job just isn’t the right fit, no matter how hard you try to make it work. That’s exactly what happened to me when I was working as a Finance Manager a couple years back. Despite giving it my all for a year, I realized that the company’s culture was something I couldn’t accept. So, I made the tough decision to leave, without a backup plan.

This wasn’t without its fair share of challenges 😅 

The Challenges I Faced After Leaving 💼

Leaving a job without another lined up made me very anxious. I had just two months to find a new job before my savings would run out. Despite the anxiety, I knew that going back to work at a traditional accounting firm wasn’t what I wanted. I was passionate about accounting technology and wanted to find a role that aligned with this interest.

All I could do was keep moving forward 🏎️ 

Persistence Pays Off: How I Found My Next Job 🌟

I reached out to several mentors for advice, and their encouragement kept me going. I even applied to one of the few tech driven accounting firms in Malaysia at the time (Xero partners of the year, Malaysia), but they turned me down, possibly because I wanted to work remotely from Ipoh while their office was in Kuala Lumpur.

But I didn’t give up. I expanded my search and started reaching out to accounting firms in Singapore, where the technology I was familiar with was more popular. After many rejections, one firm finally offered me a final interview. At the same time, I received an offer from an Australian accounting firm that allowed me to work remotely.

I chose to work with the Australian accounting firm, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of my career.

3. Stay Persistent: Rejection is part of the journey. Keep searching for the right opportunity that aligns with your goals and passions.
